By the time your professor starts talking, you’re already thinking about your next nap.

Sound familiar?🤔

For many college students, feeling tired has become such a normal part of life that they barely question it anymore.

But here’s something worth understanding:

Sleeping for eight hours doesn’t always mean you’re getting the rest your body needs.

And sometimes, the problem isn’t simply how long you sleep.

Thanks for reading! You’re Sleeping Enough Hours, but Not Getting Good Sleep

Imagine spending eight hours in bed but waking up several times during the night.

Maybe your roommate is watching videos. Maybe your phone keeps lighting up. Or maybe your room is too warm.

You might not remember every time your sleep was interrupted, but those interruptions can affect how rested you feel.

Sleep isn’t just about the number of hours you spend in bed.

Your brain and body move through different stages of sleep throughout the night. These stages help with memory, learning, physical recovery, and other important functions.

When your sleep is repeatedly interrupted, you may wake up feeling less refreshed.

What can help?

Try making your bedroom quieter, darker, and comfortably cool.

If you live in a dorm, consider earplugs or an eye mask.

And if your phone keeps waking you up, turn on Do Not Disturb before going to bed.

Small changes can make your sleeping environment more comfortable.

2. Your Sleep Schedule Changes Every Day

On Monday, you go to bed at 11 p.m.

On Tuesday, it’s 2 a.m.

By Friday, you’re awake until 4 a.m.

And on Sunday, you sleep until noon to make up for everything.

Welcome to college.

The problem is that your body follows an internal clock, often called your circadian rhythm.

This clock helps regulate when you feel sleepy and when you feel alert.

When your sleep schedule changes constantly, your body may struggle to adjust.

That’s one reason you can sleep late on the weekend and still feel tired on Monday morning.

What can help?

Try waking up around the same time every day, including weekends.

You don’t need a perfect schedule.

Start by keeping your wake-up time within roughly an hour of your usual routine when possible.

Getting some natural daylight in the morning can also help your body understand that it’s time to be awake.

Consistency matters more than creating a complicated nighttime routine.

3. Your Brain Never Gets a Real Break

Think about a typical college day.

You wake up and check your messages.

You attend lectures.

You study for an exam.

You worry about assignments.

You scroll through social media.

Then, just before sleeping, you remember something important you forgot to do.

Even when you’re sitting still, your mind may be working constantly.

Academic pressure, financial worries, and social stress can make it harder to relax and sleep well.

Sometimes, you feel mentally exhausted before the day even begins.

And although sleep is important, it doesn’t automatically solve every source of stress.

What can help?

Give yourself a short period each evening without schoolwork or social media.

You could take a walk, listen to relaxing music, read something enjoyable, or write tomorrow’s tasks on paper.

The goal isn’t to become more productive.

It’s to give your mind some space away from constant demands.

You don’t need to earn your rest.

4. Your Phone Is Keeping You Awake Longer Than You Think

You tell yourself you’ll watch one video before bed.

Then another.

And another.

Suddenly, it’s 1:30 a.m.

We’ve all been there.

Phones can affect sleep in more than one way.

The light from your screen, especially in the evening, can interfere with signals that help your body prepare for sleep.

But the content matters too.

Exciting videos, endless scrolling, stressful news, and late-night conversations can keep your brain alert when you’re trying to relax.

And even if you put your phone down at midnight, your mind might still be thinking about what you just watched.

What can help?

Try putting your phone away 30 minutes before bed.

If that feels impossible, start with 10 minutes.

Charge it away from your pillow.

Use a regular alarm clock if you need one.

The idea isn’t to stop using technology.

It’s to stop letting technology decide when you sleep.

5. You’re Using Coffee to Fix a Sleep Problem

Coffee is practically part of college culture.

Morning lecture? Coffee.

Afternoon study session? Coffee.

Deadline at midnight? More coffee.

Caffeine can temporarily improve alertness, which is why so many students rely on it.

But caffeine can remain in your body for hours.

That afternoon energy drink might still be affecting you when you’re trying to fall asleep.

And when you don’t sleep well, you may feel like you need even more caffeine the next day.

It becomes a frustrating cycle.

What can help?

Pay attention to when you drink coffee, tea, and energy drinks.

If you struggle to sleep, try avoiding caffeine for at least six to eight hours before bedtime. Some people may need a longer gap.

You don’t necessarily have to give up coffee.

Just remember that caffeine can hide tiredness for a while without replacing sleep.

6. You’re Not Moving Enough During the Day

Here’s something that sounds strange:

Sometimes, doing almost nothing all day can leave you feeling exhausted.

Think about the days when you spend hours sitting in lectures, studying at your desk, and scrolling on your phone.

By evening, your body feels heavy, even though you haven’t done much physical activity.

Regular movement can support better sleep, mood, and energy.

You don’t need an expensive gym membership or a complicated workout program.

What can help?

Walk around campus between classes.

Take a short walk after lunch.

Stretch during study breaks.

Try an activity you actually enjoy, whether that’s cycling, dancing, swimming, or playing a sport with friends.

Even a little movement is a good place to start.

The goal is to make physical activity a normal part of your day.

7. You Might Need More Sleep Than You Think

Eight hours is a useful target for many people, but it isn’t a magic number.

Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep regularly, and many feel better with eight or nine.

Younger students may need more.

Your personal sleep needs can also vary.

If you’re constantly cutting your sleep short during the week, one long night may not immediately make you feel fully rested.

And spending nine hours in bed doesn’t necessarily mean you slept for nine hours.

What can help?

For one week, pay attention to three simple things:

What time you go to bed.

What time you wake up.

How rested you feel in the morning.

Look for patterns rather than trying to achieve a perfect score.

If you consistently wake up tired, consider whether you need a more regular schedule, more time for sleep, or fewer nighttime interruptions.

8. Sometimes, Tiredness Has Nothing to Do With Your Habits

This is important.

Not every sleep problem can be fixed by putting your phone away or drinking less coffee.

Persistent fatigue can sometimes be related to health conditions such as anemia, thyroid problems, sleep apnea, depression, or other medical issues.

Certain medications can also cause tiredness.

For example, if you sleep for a full night but regularly wake up exhausted, snore loudly, gasp during sleep, or struggle to stay awake during the day, it’s worth talking to a healthcare professional.

You should

Thanks for reading! The point is what the act trains: you are someone who finishes what they start, even when it’s small and nobody’s watching.

Small details are votes

Think of every small action as a vote for the person you’re becoming. Making the bed is one vote for “I’m disciplined.” Showing up on time is a vote for “I’m reliable.” Writing down tomorrow’s plan tonight is a vote for “I’m in control.”

No single vote decides an election. But hundreds of them do. That’s how a life gets shaped — not in one dramatic moment, but in a thousand tiny ones nobody applauds.

Five small details that quietly run your life

1. Your bed, made. Two minutes. It ends the night properly and starts the morning with order instead of chaos.

2. Your desk, clear. You can’t think clearly in a mess. Students who study at a clean desk waste less time looking for things and more time actually learning. Clear the desk before you open the book.

3. Tomorrow, planned tonight. Five minutes before sleep: write down the three things that matter tomorrow. You wake up with direction instead of scrolling your phone wondering where the day went.

4. On time, every time. Being five minutes early costs you nothing and tells everyone — including yourself — that your word means something. People notice. Professors notice. Future employers notice.

5. Promises kept to yourself. This is the big one. When you tell yourself “I’ll study at 7” and you actually do it, you build self-trust. When you break small promises to yourself all day, you quietly teach yourself that your own word doesn’t matter. Nobody sees it but you — and you are the person you spend your whole life with.

Don't try to fix your whole life tonight. Pick one detail. Just the bed. Do it for seven days. Then add the desk. Small details compound — that's the whole secret. A 1% better day, repeated for a year, doesn't make you 1% better. It makes you unrecognizable.

Thanks for reading! No writing notes. No tough questions. No closing in surgery.

So I asked why. And the answer honestly shocked me.

They said it wasn’t worth the risk. One question a student couldn’t answer could be called a microaggression. A joke, a tone of voice, a small comment taken the wrong way — and you’d get written up. told myself:

“It’s fine. I’ll study tomorrow.”

Tomorrow became the weekend.

The weekend became next week.

And suddenly, the exams were getting closer.

I knew I had to study, but every time I tried, my phone was there.

One notification.

One video.

One post.

One quick check.

That “quick check” could easily become another hour.

I kept thinking I had enough time to catch up.

I didn’t.

Then I Failed My Exams 😥

Eventually, the consequences arrived.

I failed my exams.

And I lost an entire year.

That was when I realized something important.

Procrastination doesn’t always look dangerous.

Watching TikTok for 20 minutes doesn’t feel like a serious problem.

Checking Instagram doesn’t feel like a serious problem.

But when you repeat these habits every day, those minutes become hours.

Those hours become days.

And those days can eventually become months.

In my case, they cost me a year.

Your Phone Is Designed to Keep Your Attention

Think about the difference between studying and scrolling.

When you study, you have to make an effort.

You have to read.

Think.

Solve problems.

Sometimes you don’t understand something, and that can be frustrating.

Social media is much easier.

Swipe.

New video.

Swipe.

Funny video.

Swipe.

Interesting story.

Swipe.

Something completely random that you suddenly need to know everything about.

There is always something new.

And before you realize it, you’ve spent an hour consuming information you probably won’t even remember tomorrow.

Meanwhile, your notes are still sitting there.

Waiting.

The Biggest Lie: “I’ll Do It Later”

This was probably my biggest mistake.

I always believed there would be more time.

“I’ll start tonight.”

“I’ll study tomorrow.”

“I’ll catch up this weekend.”

But every time you say “later,” you’re making a small deal with your future self.

You’re basically saying:

I don’t want to deal with this now, so the future version of me can handle it.

Eventually, that future version of you runs out of time.

That’s exactly what happened to me.

You Don’t Need to Become a Productivity Robot

I’m not saying you should delete every app, stop having fun, and study 12 hours a day.

That’s unrealistic.

TikTok isn’t automatically bad.

Instagram isn’t automatically bad.

Reddit isn’t automatically bad.

The problem starts when you can no longer control how much attention you’re giving them.

If you’re trying to study, put your phone somewhere else.

Not next to your laptop.

Not face down on the desk.

Somewhere else.

Then start small.

Don’t tell yourself:

“I need to study for six hours.”

Tell yourself:

“I’m going to focus for 30 minutes.”

Thirty minutes of real focus is better than three hours of sitting at your desk while checking your phone every five minutes.

Your Time Doesn’t Feel Valuable Until It’s Gone

This is probably the biggest lesson I learned.

When you’re wasting time, it doesn’t feel expensive.

It’s just another afternoon.

Another evening.

Another weekend.

But time becomes very expensive when you realize you can’t get it back.

I can retake an exam.

I can study the material again.

I can improve my habits.

But I can’t get that year back.

So if you’re a student reading this while you’re supposed to be studying, remember my story.

Close TikTok.

Close Instagram.

Open your notes.

Or don’t.

Keep scrolling.

You’re next.

Are you a student with a story or experience worth sharing? 🎓

We’d love to hear it. sitting in a lecture, I focus less on transcribing and more on understanding and organizing information.

Here is what my notes usually look like.

1. I start with the big idea

At the top of the page, I write the subject of the lecture and the date.

Then I try to identify the main idea.

For example, in one of my lectures, the topic was “Emotion versus Rationality.”

Instead of immediately writing everything the professor said, I wrote the central concept first:

Rationality: To base your ideas and beliefs on facts/reasons.

This gives me something to build around.

When I review my notes later, I don’t have to search through an entire page to figure out what the lecture was about.

2. I write concepts in my own words

One of the biggest changes I made was stopping myself from copying definitions word-for-word.

If the professor gives a complicated definition, I try to rewrite it in a simpler way.

For example, instead of filling my page with a long explanation, I might write:

Rationality → making decisions based on facts and reasons.

The goal isn’t to create a perfect transcript.

The goal is to create notes that I can understand when I read them a week later.

3. I use examples

Whenever the professor gives an example that makes a concept easier to understand, I write it down.

In the lecture shown in my notes, we were discussing different types of sentences:

Statement

Question

Exclamation

Command

Rather than writing only the definitions, I added examples such as:

“I marked your book yesterday.”

“When did you read Chapter 1?”

“I love this book!”

“Stop what you are doing.”

Examples are extremely useful when studying later because they turn an abstract definition into something concrete.

4. I connect ideas with arrows

I don’t try to make every part of my notes look perfectly organized.

Sometimes I draw arrows everywhere.

An arrow might mean:

This idea explains that idea.

Or:

This example supports this concept.

Or even:

The professor just made an important connection.

For example, I connected the ideas of emotion and rationality visually instead of explaining the relationship with a huge paragraph.

This makes the page feel more like a map of the lecture rather than a collection of sentences.

5. I mark things that the professor emphasizes

One of the most valuable things you can capture during a lecture isn’t necessarily what is written on the board.

It’s what the professor emphasizes.

If they repeat something, spend a long time explaining it, give several examples, or say something like “This is important,” I make a note of it.

Sometimes I’ll write a short comment in the margin:

Important

Why?

Example

Possible exam question

These small annotations help me remember what deserves more attention when I study.

6. I write questions—not just answers

This is probably one of my favorite parts of my note-taking system.

If something makes me curious or confused, I don’t try to hide it.

I write the question down.

For example, in my notes, I wrote questions around the professor’s examples and explanations.

A question can become a study prompt later.

Instead of looking at my notes and thinking:

“I need to study this.”

I can look at the page and ask myself:

“Can I explain why this example proves the point?”

That’s a much more active way of studying.

7. I use the margins

The margins aren’t wasted space.

I use them for quick thoughts, questions, connections, and reminders.

Sometimes I’ll write something like:

Read this twice.

Look up this word.

Ask about this.

Important example.

These notes don’t need to be beautiful. They just need to be useful.

8. I don’t worry about making my notes perfect

This took me a while to learn.

Lecture notes are not supposed to be a finished textbook.

They’re a record of your thinking while you’re learning.

There might be arrows, crossed-out words, random questions, boxes, underlined sentences, and notes written at different angles.

That’s okay.

I’d rather have messy notes that help me understand the lecture than beautiful notes that contain nothing except copied information.

My simple rule

When I’m taking notes now, I keep one question in mind:

“If I came back to this page next month, would it help me understand the lecture?”

If the answer is yes, the notes are doing their job.

I don’t need to write everything.

I need to capture the main ideas, useful examples, important connections, questions, and anything the professor emphasizes.

The purpose of taking notes isn’t to create a perfect copy of the lecture.

It’s to create a version of the lecture that your future self can actually understand.

Thanks for reading! I had to actually plan my time for once. Here’s what changed:

I stopped rereading my notes. I used to highlight and reread the same chapter five times and feel like I “knew it.” Turns out that’s just familiarity, not memory. I switched to closing the notebook and writing down everything I remembered from scratch, then checking what I missed. First time I did this I realized I actually knew like 40% of what I thought I knew. Brutal but it worked.

I killed the marathon study sessions. I used to do 6-hour library sessions and feel accomplished just for showing up. Now I do 90-minute focused blocks, one subject at a time, then a real break — not scrolling my phone, actually walking outside. My retention in those 90 minutes beats my old 6-hour sessions.

I started reviewing on a schedule instead of cramming. Day after I learn something, then 3 days later, then a week later. Stop Studying All Day — Start Treating It Like a Job

One of the first things my aunt told me was about the structure of Cambridge’s academic terms.

With relatively short, intensive terms, students have to make their study time count. Rather than endlessly stretching studying across the entire day, she approached it more like a full-time job.

Her basic mindset was:

When it’s work time, work. When it’s finished, stop.

I used to spend three or four hours sitting at my desk, reading through notes, highlighting things, checking my phone, and convincing myself I was being productive.

But at the end of those hours, I often remembered surprisingly little.

So I tried something different: 9 AM to 5 PM became my “office hours.”

During that period, studying was the priority. I planned what I needed to accomplish and focused on actually learning rather than simply sitting with a textbook open.

Then, at 5 PM, I stopped.

No guilt. No “I should probably study for another two hours.” I could exercise, watch something, see friends, play games, or work on hobbies.

That clear boundary made studying feel much more manageable.

2. Stop Rereading — Test Yourself Instead

Another lesson that completely changed my approach was the importance of active recall and past papers.

Before this, I spent a lot of time rereading notes. It felt productive because I recognized the information while looking at it.

The problem?

Recognizing something isn’t the same as being able to remember it during an exam.

Instead, I started using past papers as a way to test what I actually knew.

I would go through questions, attempt to answer them without looking at my notes, and then compare my answers with the correct material.

I also started doing active recall by closing my notes and writing down everything I could remember about a topic.

Then I would check my notes and identify the gaps.

Those gaps became my next study targets.

This was much more uncomfortable than simply rereading.

And that’s exactly why it worked.

Instead of constantly giving myself the feeling that I understood the material, I was forcing my brain to retrieve it.

3. Separate Your Work From Your Rest

This was probably the biggest lesson I took from my aunt.

She didn’t try to study at maximum intensity every single day.

Instead, she created a strict separation between work and recovery.

When it was a study day, she took the work seriously. She didn’t spend half the day procrastinating and then attempt to compensate with an all-nighter.

But when it was time to rest, she actually rested.

No feeling guilty for watching a movie.

No thinking about unfinished assignments every five minutes.

No convincing herself that she should be studying while trying to relax.

That distinction helped her avoid the cycle I had fallen into:

Procrastinate → panic → cram all night → sleep badly → feel exhausted → procrastinate again.

Rest isn’t the enemy of productivity.

If anything, proper recovery makes focused studying possible in the first place.

4. Work Smarter Instead of Constantly Working Longer

The biggest change wasn’t that I suddenly started studying eight hours every day.

It was that I became much more intentional about how I used my study time.

Instead of measuring productivity by how long I sat at my desk, I started measuring it by what I could actually remember and apply.

Instead of rereading the same chapter five times, I tested myself.

Instead of studying until midnight because I felt guilty, I gave myself a clear stopping point.

And instead of treating rest as something I had to “earn,” I treated it as part of the system.

That change in mindset made it much easier to stay consistent.

What I Took Away From the Cambridge Approach

There isn’t a magical “Cambridge method” that guarantees perfect grades.

But the principles my aunt shared with me completely changed my approach to studying:

Focus intensely when you’re working. Use active recall instead of passive rereading. Practice with past papers. And protect your time away from studying.

The goal isn’t to spend every possible hour studying.

The goal is to make the hours you do study actually count.

For me, this approach made a massive difference. I became more consistent, procrastinated less, and felt much more in control of my workload. Most importantly, I stopped feeling like I had to choose between doing well academically and having a life outside of studying.

I ended up earning a 3.9 GPA last semester, but the bigger win was finding a study system that I could actually maintain.

Sometimes, studying smarter really does beat studying longer.

🎁 Free eBook: Nobody Taught Us How to Study

College teaches you a lot of things. But nobody really teaches you how to manage everything that comes with it.

That’s why we created Nobody Taught Us How to Study, a free 20-page college survival guide from Labor Statistics, some of the fastest-growing occupations between 2024 and 2034 include data scientists, information security analysts, nurse practitioners and software developers.

Data scientists are projected to grow 33.5%, information security analysts 28.5%, nurse practitioners 40.1%, and software developers 15.8%.

That tells us something important:

AI isn’t simply destroying technology jobs. It’s also creating demand for people who can build, manage, secure and apply AI-powered systems.

Cybersecurity is particularly interesting. As companies become more dependent on digital systems and AI, protecting those systems becomes more important, not less.

Healthcare is another strong area because it combines technology with something AI still struggles to completely replace: human interaction, physical care, responsibility and judgment.

Engineering, mathematics, statistics, computer science, healthcare and energy-related fields therefore deserve serious consideration.

But some jobs are becoming more vulnerable

The biggest risk isn’t necessarily a particular college major.

It’s choosing a career where the majority of your future work consists of routine, predictable, digital tasks.

The latest BLS projections show declines in several occupations that involve repetitive administrative or information-processing work. Customer service representatives, for example, are projected to decline 5.5% between 2024 and 2034, while legal secretaries and some other clerical occupations are also expected to shrink.

This doesn’t mean these people will suddenly become unemployed because of ChatGPT.

It means the number of people companies need to perform certain tasks may decrease.

That’s a very different — and more realistic — way to think about AI.

The real advantage may be combining skills

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies AI and big data as the fastest-growing skills, followed by networks and cybersecurity and technological literacy. But it also highlights creative thinking, analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility and leadership.

That combination is the real opportunity.

Don’t just study marketing.

Study marketing + analytics + AI.

Don’t just study computer science.

Study computer science + AI + cybersecurity + communication.

Don’t just study business.

Understand technology, data and automation.

Don’t just study healthcare.

Learn how AI and digital tools are transforming healthcare.

The future belongs less to people who know one isolated skill and more to people who can combine technical knowledge with human judgment.

So, what should a student do?

My advice is simple:

Don’t try to find a major that AI can never touch.

That major probably doesn’t exist.

Instead, choose a field where AI can make you more powerful, rather than a field where AI can easily perform most of what you do.

Learn how to use AI.

But also learn the fundamentals without it.

Build communication skills.

Learn how to solve unfamiliar problems.

Get real-world experience before graduation.

And most importantly, don’t choose a major simply because it’s popular today.

The question isn’t:

“What job is safe from AI?”

The better question is:

“What kind of person will be extremely valuable in a world where everyone has access to AI?”

That’s the question students should be asking before they choose their major.

Thanks for reading! mistakes students make is confusing reading with learning.

You can read an entire chapter and remember almost nothing the next day.

You can highlight dozens of pages and still struggle to explain the main concept.

You can spend five hours at your desk and make very little progress.

Why?

Because simply exposing yourself to information doesn’t guarantee that your brain has actually learned it.

Real learning requires you to think about, retrieve, explain, and use the information.

Stop measuring studying by hours

“I studied for six hours today.”

It sounds productive.

But hours aren’t the best measurement of learning.

A better question is:

What can I do now that I couldn’t do before?

If you studied a chapter for two hours but can’t explain its main ideas without looking at your notes, you probably need a different approach.

On the other hand, if you can close the textbook and explain the concepts in your own words, you’ve actually made progress.

The goal isn’t to sit at your desk longer.

The goal is to learn more effectively.

Close the textbook

One of the simplest things you can do is also one of the most powerful.

After reading a section, close the book.

Now ask yourself:

What did I just learn?

Can I explain it?

What are the main ideas?

Why does this concept matter?

Can I give an example?

If you can’t answer, that’s okay.

You’ve just discovered exactly what you need to work on.

This is much more valuable than simply rereading the same paragraph five times.

Don’t highlight everything

Highlighting can be useful, but it can also become an illusion of productivity.

If half the page is highlighted, what exactly is important?

Instead of marking everything, focus on understanding the material.

After reading, try to recreate the important information from memory.

Write down the key concepts without looking.

Then check your answers.

The things you forgot are the things you should review.

Teach yourself by teaching someone else

Here’s another powerful technique:

Explain the topic as if you’re teaching it to someone who knows nothing about it.

Use simple language.

Avoid reading directly from the textbook.

Don’t hide behind complicated terminology.

If you understand something, you should be able to explain the basic idea clearly.

And if you can’t explain it?

That’s useful.

It shows you where your understanding is weak.

Go back, study that part, and try again.

Review instead of cramming

Another common mistake is waiting until the night before an exam.

You study for hours, memorize as much as possible, take the exam, and then forget most of it afterward.

A better approach is to return to the material repeatedly.

Study it today.

Test yourself tomorrow.

Review it again a few days later.

Then come back to it again.

The spacing between sessions gives your brain more opportunities to retrieve the information.

And retrieval is exactly what you want to practice.

Your study session should feel difficult

This might sound strange, but good studying isn’t always comfortable.

If you’re constantly rereading information you already know, everything feels easy.

But easy doesn’t necessarily mean effective.

When you try to recall something without looking at the answer, you may struggle.

That struggle is useful.

When you attempt a practice problem and get it wrong, that’s useful too.

When you try to explain something and realize you don’t fully understand it, that’s useful.

Mistakes reveal what you need to learn.

A simple study system

Next time you sit down with a textbook, try this:

1. Preview the chapter.
Look at the headings, diagrams and key sections.

2. Set a goal.
Know what you want to understand before you start.

3. Read actively.
Don’t just move your eyes across the page. Ask questions.

4. Close the book.
Try to recall what you just learned.

5. Explain it.
Put the concept into your own words.

6. Find your weaknesses.
Focus your next study session on what you couldn’t remember.

7. Review later.
Don’t rely entirely on one massive study session.

It’s not complicated.

But it requires you to stop thinking about studying as time spent with a textbook.

Instead, think about studying as training your ability to understand and retrieve information.

Learn how to learn

The world has never had more information available to us.

Books, courses, lectures, tutorials, articles and educational resources are everywhere.

But having access to information isn’t the same as knowing what to do with it.

One of the most valuable skills you can develop is the ability to learn efficiently.

You don’t necessarily need to study harder.

You don’t necessarily need to study longer.

You need to understand how your brain learns best and build a system around it.

Because once you learn how to learn, every textbook becomes more valuable.

Don’t just study more. Learn how to study.

Thanks for reading! ChatGPT — Best Overall AI Study Assistant

ChatGPT remains one of the most versatile options for students because it can handle a wide range of academic tasks.

Its biggest advantage in 2026 is that students can use Study Mode, which is specifically designed around learning rather than simply producing an answer. It can ask questions, break difficult concepts into smaller pieces, work through problems step by step, create practice questions, and check whether the student actually understands the material.

That makes ChatGPT particularly useful as a personal study partner.

Instead of asking:

“Solve this homework problem.”

A student can ask:

“Don’t give me the answer yet. Ask me questions and guide me toward solving it myself.”

That small change can completely alter the educational value of AI.

Best for: explaining difficult topics, homework practice, exam preparation, brainstorming, writing feedback, coding, and general study.

The catch: ChatGPT can still make mistakes. Students should verify important information and follow their school’s AI policies.

2. NotebookLM — Best for Studying Your Own Materials

If ChatGPT is a general-purpose study assistant, NotebookLM is closer to an AI study desk built around your own sources.

You can give it course materials, readings, notes and other documents, then use those materials as the foundation for your questions and study sessions.

This is particularly useful before exams.

Imagine having a 150-page collection of lecture notes. Instead of manually searching through everything, you can use an AI system to help identify important concepts, explain sections, generate study materials and help you review what you have uploaded.

Google has continued expanding NotebookLM and integrating it with its broader education ecosystem. In 2026, Google also introduced study-focused experiences connecting Gemini and NotebookLM, including personalized lessons, quizzes and flashcards based on student materials.

Best for: lecture notes, PDFs, readings, exam preparation, source-based studying and organizing large amounts of course material.

The biggest advantage is simple:

You are studying from your material instead of asking a general chatbot to guess what your course is about.

3. Perplexity — Best for Research and Finding Sources

When students need to research a topic, one of the biggest problems with general AI chatbots is knowing where information came from.

That’s where Perplexity becomes useful.

It is designed around AI-powered search and provides sources alongside its answers, making it easier for students to investigate claims and continue reading the original material.

Current student discussions frequently mention Perplexity specifically for research because its answers are accompanied by sources.

For example, instead of asking:

“Explain the effects of climate change.”

A better research workflow is:

“Give me an overview of the effects of climate change, identify the strongest academic and institutional sources, and separate established findings from areas where researchers disagree.”

Now the AI becomes a research starting point rather than the final authority.

Best for: research, finding sources, fact-checking, current information and discovering material for essays.

The catch: citations don’t automatically make an answer correct. Students should still open the sources and verify that they actually support the claims being made.

4. Claude — Best for Deep Explanations and Reasoning

Claude has become another important option for students, particularly those working with long documents, complicated ideas and writing-heavy assignments.

Anthropic’s education-focused version includes Learning Mode, which is explicitly designed to act more like a tutor than an answer machine. It uses Socratic questioning and encourages students to discover solutions themselves.

This approach is interesting because it addresses one of the biggest problems with generative AI in education:

If AI does all the thinking, what does the student actually learn?

Claude’s educational approach tries to reverse that relationship.

Instead of immediately producing the solution, the AI can guide the student through the reasoning process.

Best for: complex explanations, long documents, essay development, research discussions and learning through guided reasoning.

5. Gemini — Best for Students Already Using Google’s Ecosystem

For students who live inside Google Docs, Drive, Gmail and other Google services, Gemini has a major advantage: it is increasingly connected to the tools students already use.

Google has been expanding Gemini’s education capabilities throughout 2026. Its student-focused tools can create personalized study guides, quizzes and flashcards from uploaded materials, while new “study notebooks” are designed to adapt lessons based on a student’s progress.

Google is also pushing these capabilities directly into education environments. Universities are beginning to adopt Gemini and NotebookLM, with institutions using them to support research, learning and AI literacy.

Best for: students already using Google Workspace, study guides, quizzes, research, presentations and career preparation.

So Which One Should Students Actually Use?

The answer probably isn’t to choose just one.

The most interesting pattern emerging from student discussions is that students are beginning to build AI workflows rather than relying on a single chatbot.

A simple student workflow could look like this:

ChatGPT → understand the concept

NotebookLM → study your course materials

Perplexity → research and find sources

Claude → work through complex ideas

Gemini → connect your studying with Google’s ecosystem

That is much more useful than downloading 20 different AI applications.

The Real Skill Isn’t Knowing Every AI Tool

There is another lesson hiding underneath all of this.

Students don’t need to become experts in dozens of AI platforms.

They need to understand which tool to use for which problem.

Use AI to explain something you don’t understand.

Use it to test your knowledge.

Use it to challenge your argument.

Use it to organize your notes.

Use it to find sources.

Use it to practice.

But don’t turn your education into a process where AI does everything while you simply submit the result.

That may save an hour today.

It could cost you a skill tomorrow.

The students who benefit most from AI may ultimately be those who learn how to use these tools without giving up the thinking that education is supposed to develop.

The discussion

So here’s the question students should be asking in 2026:

Are we using AI to become better students — or are we using AI so that we don’t have to be students at all?

The difference is not the technology.

It’s the workflow.

And that may be the most important AI skill students can learn.

Thanks for reading! ChatGPT was reported as the most common tool, ahead of other AI assistants.

Meanwhile, Pew Research Center found that 54% of U.S. teenagers had used AI chatbots to get help with schoolwork. Information searching and schoolwork were among the most common reasons teenagers turned to chatbots.

So the question is no longer whether students are using ChatGPT.

The question is what happens when they do.

1. ChatGPT may actually improve learning

The popular image of ChatGPT in education is simple: a student gives the AI a homework question, copies the answer and submits it.

But research is beginning to show a more complicated picture.

A 2026 meta-analysis published in Scientific Reports examined 35 experimental studies involving 4,193 participants. Researchers found a moderate positive effect of ChatGPT on student learning outcomes, including both cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

That does not mean that ChatGPT automatically makes students smarter.

Instead, it suggests that the way AI is integrated into learning matters enormously.

A student who asks:

“Give me the answer.”

is using AI very differently from a student who asks:

“Explain why this answer is correct and give me another example so I can test myself.”

The technology is the same.

The learning process is completely different.

2. Students are not just using AI to write essays

Another important finding is that student AI use is much broader than simply asking ChatGPT to write assignments.

According to Pew Research Center’s 2026 research, students use chatbots for researching topics, solving mathematical problems, editing their work and other forms of schoolwork. More than half of teenagers surveyed said they had used chatbots for schoolwork.

This changes how we should think about ChatGPT.

It can function as a tutor.

It can explain a difficult concept in simpler language.

It can generate practice questions.

It can provide feedback on an argument.

It can help a student identify gaps in their understanding.

And it can allow students to ask the same question repeatedly without feeling embarrassed about not understanding it the first time.

That last point may be one of AI’s most underrated educational advantages.

A student may hesitate to ask a teacher, “Can you explain this again?”

They can ask ChatGPT ten times.

3. But there is a dangerous shortcut

There is another side to the story.

AI can make learning easier — but it can also make avoiding learning easier.

This is where the educational debate becomes complicated.

If a student uses ChatGPT to understand a difficult concept, AI becomes a learning assistant.

If the student asks ChatGPT to complete the entire assignment and submits the result without understanding it, AI becomes a substitute for learning.

Recent experimental research supports this distinction. Researchers found that students could experience learning gains when using generative AI, particularly when they used it to explain concepts and support their understanding rather than simply automate the production of their work.

That suggests an important principle for students:

Don’t use AI to remove the thinking. Use AI to improve the thinking.

4. The cheating debate is getting harder

Schools and universities are understandably worried about academic integrity.

But AI has created a difficult situation.

Students can now generate essays, solve problems, summarize research and produce other academic material in seconds. At the same time, educational institutions are still trying to determine what acceptable AI assistance should look like.

Pew’s 2026 research found that 59% of U.S. teenagers believe students at their school use AI chatbots to cheat at least somewhat often. Among teenagers who themselves use chatbots for schoolwork, that perception rises to 76%.

But banning AI entirely may not solve the underlying problem.

AI is becoming part of the workplace as well as education.

Students are going to graduate into a world where knowing how to work with AI may be a valuable professional skill.

That creates a strange contradiction:

Universities want students to demonstrate independent thinking, while employers increasingly want graduates who know how to work effectively with AI.

The solution may not be to teach students to avoid AI.

It may be to teach them how to use it responsibly.

5. The most important skill may become AI literacy

This could be the biggest lesson from the current research.

Students don’t necessarily need to choose between “doing everything themselves” and “letting AI do everything.”

There is a third option:

Human + AI collaboration.

The student remains responsible for understanding the material, checking information, forming opinions and making decisions.

AI becomes the assistant.

This model is already beginning to appear in education. OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are all developing education-focused AI tools and programs, while universities and schools are experimenting with ways to integrate AI into learning rather than simply banning it.

The direction is becoming increasingly clear.

AI is entering education whether institutions are ready or not.

So, should students use ChatGPT?

Yes — but differently.

Use it to explain.

Use it to question.

Use it to practice.

Use it to brainstorm.

Use it to challenge your arguments.

Use it to find weaknesses in your understanding.

Use it as a tutor.

But don’t let it become the person doing the learning for you.

The most valuable student in the AI era may not be the student who knows how to write the perfect prompt.

It may be the student who knows when to question the AI’s answer.

That distinction will become increasingly important as AI becomes more capable.

The bigger discussion

The debate about ChatGPT in education is often presented as a battle between two sides.

One side says AI is destroying education.

The other says AI is transforming education.

The research suggests that neither position tells the whole story.

AI can improve learning outcomes. Students clearly find it useful. Its adoption is already widespread. At the same time, over-reliance, academic dishonesty and the possibility of replacing genuine cognitive effort remain serious concerns.

Perhaps the real question isn’t:

“Should students use ChatGPT?”

Perhaps it is:

“What should students be doing themselves, and what should AI be helping them do?”

That is the conversation universities, teachers and students should be having now.

Because ChatGPT isn’t waiting for education to decide whether it belongs in the classroom.

It is already there.

Thanks for reading! Before the day has even started, their attention is already being controlled by other people and outside distractions.

A better approach is to create a simple morning structure that gives you some control over your time.

That doesn’t mean copying the routines of famous entrepreneurs or waking up at an extreme hour. The most useful routine is one that fits your own schedule and is realistic enough to repeat consistently.

Starting with basic actions can make a difference. Getting out of bed without immediately reaching for your phone, drinking some water, moving your body, preparing for the day, or spending a few quiet minutes planning what needs to be done can create a stronger sense of direction.

Exercise can also become an important part of the morning. It doesn’t have to be an intense workout. Even regular movement can help you transition from sleep into an active state.

Another important element is reducing unnecessary distractions. If social media is the first thing you consume every morning, it’s easy to lose valuable time before you’ve decided what actually matters that day.

Instead, the morning can be used to establish priorities.

The key lesson is that there is no universal “perfect” morning routine. What works for one person may be completely impractical for another.

The real benefit comes from consistency.

When you repeatedly start your day with a few deliberate actions, you create a routine that reduces decision-making and makes it easier to focus on important tasks.

A productive morning isn’t about doing more things before breakfast.

It’s about starting the day on your own terms rather than allowing distractions to decide what your day will look like.

Thanks for reading! Instead of presenting themselves as productivity experts who have mastered everything, they showed that being organized and ambitious doesn’t mean being perfect.

The conversation covered a collection of surprisingly ordinary habits. Some involved food, others personal routines, spending decisions, and even small things people do without thinking.

One person might refuse to eat leftovers, while another buys far more tea than necessary. Someone else might put an empty container back in the refrigerator instead of throwing it away. There were also stories involving unusual accents, questionable food choices, forgotten personal items, and unnecessarily expensive hobbies.

The point wasn’t really about the habits themselves.

It was about showing the people behind the productivity advice.

Online creators often present an ideal version of their lives. Their audiences see carefully planned routines, successful projects, and useful advice, but rarely see the small imperfections that make them ordinary people.

The episode argues that these imperfections don’t prevent someone from being productive or successful.

In fact, they can make the idea of productivity more realistic.

You don’t need to have a perfect morning routine, flawless discipline, or complete control over every part of your life to make progress. You can have strange habits, make silly decisions, and still accomplish meaningful things.

The bigger lesson is simple: productivity isn’t about becoming a perfect person. It’s about learning how to make progress despite being an imperfect one.

Thanks for reading! a student named Daniel, living in a small town in southern Chile. While working on a school project involving sensors and human movement, he quickly discovered that building a prototype was much easier than understanding why the measurements were unreliable.

His device produced inconsistent readings. Sometimes the signal looked correct; other times it was overwhelmed by noise.

Instead of abandoning the project, Daniel began searching for university-level material covering electronics, signal processing and biomedical engineering.

What changed his approach was discovering that many of these subjects could be studied online through freely available university course materials.

Rather than relying on short tutorials or fragmented explanations, he began working through complete lectures, assignments and technical notes. Slowly, concepts that had previously seemed abstract started becoming practical tools.

Noise was no longer simply something that “went wrong.” He could understand where it came from. Circuit design became easier to reason about. Signal processing stopped looking like a collection of complicated formulas and started becoming a method for extracting useful information from messy data.

The important part wasn’t simply learning more theory.

It was learning how to solve problems.

That distinction matters.

Traditional education often measures whether a student can remember information or pass an examination. Independent learning can be different. When someone is trying to repair a prototype or understand why an experiment failed, there is an immediate reason to find the answer.

The knowledge has somewhere to go.

This is one of the most interesting possibilities created by open educational resources. A student doesn’t necessarily have to wait until university to encounter university-level ideas.

Someone interested in electronics can explore circuits. A future computer scientist can study algorithms. An aspiring physicist can work through advanced mathematics. A student interested in medicine or biomechanics can begin understanding how sensors, signals and human movement are connected.

And the effect can go beyond academics.

For an independent learner, completing a difficult course can create something that is harder to measure on a transcript: confidence.

The first time a complicated technical problem becomes understandable, the student begins approaching future problems differently.

Instead of asking, “Can I do this?”

The question becomes:

“What do I need to learn to solve it?”

That mindset can be just as valuable as the technical knowledge itself.

Open education also changes the geography of learning. A student doesn’t necessarily need to live near a major university to access high-quality educational material. With an internet connection and enough determination, someone studying in a small town can explore subjects taught at institutions thousands of kilometres away.

Of course, free online courses are not a replacement for everything universities provide. Laboratories, professors, classmates, mentorship and formal qualifications still matter enormously.

But open educational platforms can remove one important barrier: the assumption that advanced knowledge has to remain behind a classroom door .

The bigger lesson is perhaps not about any particular university or platform.

It is about what happens when curiosity meets access.

Give a motivated learner the right resources, enough time, and a real problem to solve, and the internet can become much more than a place to consume information.

It can become a laboratory.

And sometimes, the first step toward becoming an engineer isn’t getting accepted into an engineering program.

It’s simply deciding to start learning.

Thanks for reading!
