I almost dropped out sophomore year. 2.1 GPA, three all-nighters a week, still bombing exams. I thought I just wasn’t smart enough for my major.
The turning point was dumb honestly — I got sick during finals week and couldn’t cram. I had to actually plan my time for once. Here’s what changed:
I stopped rereading my notes. I used to highlight and reread the same chapter five times and feel like I “knew it.” Turns out that’s just familiarity, not memory. I switched to closing the notebook and writing down everything I remembered from scratch, then checking what I missed. First time I did this I realized I actually knew like 40% of what I thought I knew. Brutal but it worked.
I killed the marathon study sessions. I used to do 6-hour library sessions and feel accomplished just for showing up. Now I do 90-minute focused blocks, one subject at a time, then a real break — not scrolling my phone, actually walking outside. My retention in those 90 minutes beats my old 6-hour sessions.
I started reviewing on a schedule instead of cramming. Day after I learn something, then 3 days later, then a week later. Sounds like extra work but it’s way less than the panic-cramming I used to do before exams.
I changed where I studied. My room was useless — bed right there, too comfortable. Started going to a random study room in a building I don’t even have classes in. No distractions I associate with relaxing.
